Diwali – the Hindu festival of Lights
Happy Diwali! The Hindu Festival of Lights is on!
Diwali – the Hindu Festival of Lights
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, is the most popular of all the festivals from South Asia. The festival of Diwali extends over five days. Because of the lights, fireworks and sweets involved, it’s a great favourite with children.
The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, although the actual legends that go with the festival are different in different parts of India.
In Britain, as in India, the festival is a time for thoroughly spring-cleaning the home, wearing new clothes and most importantly, decorating buildings with fancy lights, and celebrating!
Lights and fireworks
The name of the festival comes from the Sanskrit word dipavali, meaning row of lights.

Diwali is known as the ‘festival of lights’ because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas. These lamps, which are traditionally fuelled by mustard oil, are placed in rows in windows, doors and outside buildings to decorate them.
The lamps are lit to help the goddess Lakshmi find her way into people’s homes. They also celebrate one of the Diwali legends, which tell of the return of Rama and Sita to Rama’s kingdom after fourteen years of exile.
In India oil lamps are often floated across the river Ganges – it is regarded as a good omen if the lamp manages to get all the way across.
Lakshmi, wealth and prosperity
For many Indians the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
People start the new business year at Diwali, and some Hindus will say prayers to the goddess for a successful year.
Some people build a small altar to the goddess and decorate it with money and with pictures of the rewards of wealth, such as cars and houses. The goddess Kali is celebrated at Diwali in the Bengali and Oriya areas of India.
Hindus will leave the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi can come in. Rangoli are drawn on the floors – Rangoli are patterns and the most popular subject is the lotus flower. This is because images of Lakshmi traditionally show her either holding a lotus or sitting on one, and the Diwali lamps are regarded as making it easy for Lakshmi to find her way to favoured houses.
There is much feasting and celebrating.
So what is eaten during the five-day festival?
The simple answer is sweets – and plenty of them. Indian sweetmeats, known as mithai are a cross between snack, dessert and confectionery. If there’s one thing that captures the Indian culinary psyche, it’s mithai. Small morsels are nibbled throughout the day, on their own, with masala chai or as part of a meal alongside savoury items.
Chickpea flour, rice flour, semolina, various beans, lentils and grains, squashes, carrots, thickened condensed milk or yoghurt are normally used as base ingredients; to which cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios, chirongi nuts or raisins are added. Fragrant with sweet spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg, they’re further enhanced with saffron, rose or kewra (pandan leaf) water, and silver or gold leaf.
While ladoos, barfis and halwas are universally popular, some other items like mawa kachori, moti pak and sohan papdi are more regional specialities requiring elaborate preparation. It’s customary to exchange extravagantly decorated boxes of mithai, dried fruit, nuts or silver serving dishes with family and friends.

Winter Proof your hair and skin with TIANA Beauty Sensations Range
It’s cold outside you know!.. Give your skin a little TLC with TIANA Beauty Sensations Range
What TIANA Pure Virgin Coconut Oil Essential for Dry Skin gives to you
No doubt about it, it’s getting colder and wetter out there at the moment! But what did you use on your skin before you braved the cold weather today? Many people only remember to protect their skin from the sun when it’s hot but cold temperatures and harsh wind can also have a negative effect on your skin, leaving it very dry, dull, dehydrated and often wrinkled.
It’s important to remember that when the temperatures are low, it is essential not to use skin care products containing a high content of water. This is because water freezes below 0°C and if your daily skincare product contains water (generally face cream can contains up to 50% water), this water freezes on your skin making fine lines and wrinkles much more visible. That is why when the weather is extremely cold it is best to switch your daily moisturiser to a face cream containing as little water as possible.
TIANA Pure Virgin Coconut Oil Essential for Dry Skin is pore-friendly and contains fatty acids that are a natural component of the skin’s barrier making it a fantastic moisturiser. TIANA Pure Virgin Coconut Oil Essential for Dry Skin not only prevents water loss but actually helps to replace the skin’s lost lipids. It has natural moisturising properties and is packed with nutrients such as vitamin E and Lauric acid. So when it’s cold try our coconut oil as part of your skincare regime.
TIANA Pure Virgin Coconut Oil for Dry Skin can be used as the all over body moisturiser, which replenishes vital moisture levels leaving skin supple, clear and silky smooth without feeling greasy. It is suitable for dry, mature, sensitive, as well as problem skin. TIANA Pure Virgin Coconut Oil for Dry Skin is 100% pure and does not contain mineral oil – it is truly natural and organic.
You have to remember that not all coconut oils found in stores are good for the skin! Some coconut oils are refined and if you use such oil on your skin it will be almost the same as using sunflower oil – and you wouldn’t ever do that! There are several brands of cheap, low quality ‘virgin coconut oil’ on the market, which are supposedly organic or even fair trade but are produced from desiccated coconut by expeller, and will not give your skin any benefits whatsoever – quality is always key when it comes to coconut oil so be sure to choose TIANA Pure Virgin Coconut Oil. Its high moisturising properties naturally soothe the skin providing a radiant complexion.
As an essential moisturiser for dry and sensitive skin, it is the purest multi-functional coconut oil that provides outstanding moisturising benefits for the skin, can also be used on hair.
This luxurious virgin coconut oil is suitable for dry, mature, sensitive, delicate skin as well as for problem skin due to its high content of Lauric acid. It can be applied to sunburnt skin to reduce inflammation and moisturise the skin. For men it is great to apply after shaving to control skin irritation. This is a family favourite product that is even suitable for babies. It’s a must have product to be kept in the bathroom cabinet for all the family to use. Its unbeatable price in a 100 mm jar gives double the size of most other cream products on the market, making it very cost effective. So don’t wait until that cold wet weather has started to take its effect on your skin.

With the summer months over many people may think its fine to ignore protecting their skin – wrong! Harsh winter weather also has an effect on our skin, so it is important to protect it just like we do from the sun.
During the winter months it is important not to use skin care products containing a high content of water. This is because water can freeze, especially below temperatures below 0°C and if your daily skincare product contains too much water (generally face cream can contains up to 50% water), this water freezes on your skin making fine lines and wrinkles much more visible. Also as soon as the water evaporates, the dry skin returns resulting in constant need to reapply. Furthermore, beauty products containing a high percentage of water generally have a short shelf life therefore these products in order to increase their shelf life contain various preservatives and chemicals.
This is why when the weather is extremely cold it is best to switch your daily moisturiser to a face cream containing as little water as possible. Moisturising your skin with coconut oil such as TIANA Rose Fresh Coconut TLC Anti-Ageing Moisturiser is a very effective way of looking after your skin in winter conditions.
