The Piña Colada Story

The favourite drink of Caribbean cruisers is the piña colada. It was invented in 1954 by Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His aim was to capture all the flavours of Puerto Rico in a glass. He experimented for three months before settling on the piña colada.

Monchito served his famous drink to thousands of hotel guests, including John Wayne and Gloria Swanson. In 1978 Puerto Rico declared the piña colada its national drink. An estimated 200 million piña coladas have been served since 1954.

Summer Cycling

On your bike with the great taste of Coconut Water

summer cycling

With cycling gaining in popularity by the day and the summer season arrived; what better way to accompany that cycling journey than with a drink of TIANA Organic Coconut Water.

Coconut Water has become so increasingly popular with cyclists it is even being touted as “nature’s sports drink” and has become all the rage with many celebrities and professional cyclists for its hydrating properties.

Hydration is critical to athletic performance. In fact, dehydration is one of the most common reasons for early fatigue during exercise. All it takes is losing as little as 2 per cent of your body weight for the performance-robbing effects of dehydration to kick in.

Sweating is the body’s way of releasing heat from working muscles. If you don’t drink enough during exercise and you lose too much fluid from sweat, body temperature rises and performance can suffer.

So, why coconut water?  Compared with most sports drinks, it’s lower in calories (45 to 60 calories per 250 ml), carbohydrates and sodium, and higher in potassium, another mineral that gets sweated out during cycling. Coconut water, the juice of young green coconuts, also contains magnesium and calcium.

When you hydrate with coconut water the key is to drink enough fluids before, during and after cycling. This might sound like an easy task, yet research indicates that many cyclists fall short.

Two hours before Cycling, drink 500 ml of cool fluid. During exercise, keep a water bottle handy and drink 125 to 250 ml every 15 to 20 minutes. Drink even if you don’t feel thirsty.

After cycling, replenish the fluid you lose through sweat. Learn how much sweat you lose during cycling by weighing yourself before and after a long cycle ride. For every pound of weight you lose during cycling, drink roughly 500 ml of fluid to rehydrate. It’s also important to replenish your muscles with carbohydrates and proteins from foods or a sports recovery drink.

When embarking on that exhilarating cycle ride that need to rehydrate and prevent cramping can be assisted by drinking a can of TIANA Organic Coconut Water each hour of warm weather cycling. This highly nutritional drink will assist in replenishing your muscles glycogen and help prevent reaching exhaustion.

Organic, with a low acidity and no added sugars or additives TIANA Organic Coconut Water is a delicious superior sports drink that gives maximum refreshment. So, before, during and after that embracing cycle ride make sure you take with you several cans of TIANA Organic Coconut Water.
