The Facts about Oil Pulling

What is oil pulling? Oil pulling is simply the process of rinsing coconut oil around your mouth (similar to what you do with mouthwash) for up to 20 minutues to detoxify and remove impurities. It can be a great way to get rid of bacteria in the mouth, helping to prevent oral problems which may lead to other health issues elsewhere in the body.

Supper Club in Paradise

We were delighted to attend Madeleine Shaw’s Supper Club at Paradise last night and experience her delicious and nutritious recipes. Some of which were even created using TIANA Organic Raw Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and TIANA Organic Coconut Water 🙂

The night started with Pineapple Cocktails with Vodka and TIANA Organic Coconut Water……

 Interested in the link between coconut oil and Alzheimer’s? Here are the details you need to know….

Alzheimer’s  and Parkinson’s disease are both neurodegenerative diseases meaning the loss of nerve cells in the brain. Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, is a progressive brain disease that is considered to be irreversible, as the process causes brain cells to lose their connection. The number of people affected by Alzheimer’s is estimated to be approximately 100 million worldwide

Sadly, the causes of Alzheimer’s are still unknown and there is no treatment available as yet that can cure this condition completely. However, research suggests that Alzheimer’s disease is related to insulin deficiency or an insulin resistance in the brain sometimes described as “type 3 diabetes”. Glucose is the primary fuel for our cells and insulin is required to allow glucose to enter our cells. If the ability to make and use insulin becomes defective, cells malfunction and die as the connections between cells disintegrate, which may lead to memory loss.

Our brain and most other organs have the ability to use certain alternative fuels if glucose is not available. In survival conditions, such as starvation for example, our body burns fat which releases fatty acids some of which are converted to Ketons. The process of producing Ketons is called ketogenesis. Ketons are produced when the glucose stored in the body has been used up and fat is broken down to be used as energy. Ketons do not require insulin to enter our cells.

A Ketogenic diet is high in fat and low in carbohydrate and protein. Research shows that when we eat certain foods containing medium chain fatty acids, such as coconut oil, these medium chain fatty acids are converted to Ketons, which can be used by the brain as fuel. Medium chain fatty acids are absorbed directly from the intestine into the liver, where they are partially converted to Ketons. These Ketons are then utilised by cells that can use them, including those in the brain and it is here that they serve as an alternative fuel for cells that are unable to use glucose effectively.

Fresh coconuts are very nutrient rich and are high in medium chain fatty acids. They also provide a good source of iron, phosphorus, zinc,  protein, as well as fibre and contain few naturally occurring sugars.
